The opening round of the FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) is the International Rally of Whangarei in New Zealand. Taking place in and around Whangarei, on the northern tip of the country’s North Island, just a couple of hours from Auckland, this event takes place on roads formerly used by the WRC event.

This event classes itself as the ultimate drivers’ rally as it is run on smooth, fast, cambered gravel roads. Conditions in New Zealand during spring are usually mild, meaning that this is a rally which is more often than not won and lost of the prowess of the driver rather than any other mitigating factors.

2017 Rally of Whangarei – Final results:
1. Gill / Prevot (IND/BEL) ŠKODA FABIA R5 2:35:06.8 hrs
2. Veiby / Skjarmoen (NOR/NOR) ŠKODA FABIA R5 + 2:02.8 min
3. Blomberg / Andersson (SWE/SWE) Mitsubishi Mirage + 17:45.5 min

During the first leg the Norwegian rookie team Ole Christian Veiby / Stig Rune Skjaermœn took the lead. On the third but last stage, Veiby had a technical issue, after a roadside repair incurred a time penalty and dropped to second place behind teammate Gill.
