A unique exhibition celebrating 125 years of Škoda Motorsport is currently taking place at the Škoda Museum in Mladá Boleslav. The display features competition cars and a host of many other treasures connected with motorsport. Rally champion Jan Kopecký invites visitors to take a closer look.
Never before have so many unique Škoda competition cars been on display in one place. The exhibition at the Škoda Museum showcases the history of motorsport at the Mladá Boleslav-based manufacturer in all its glory. Visitors are welcomed at the entrance by the current Fabia RS Rally2 featuring a special anniversary livery; behind it, a journey through history begins.
The early years are represented, among others, by the beautiful Laurin & Klement FC from 1908, a car which could race along the dusty roads of that time reaching speeds of around 100 km/h. “On these narrow tyres, which are about as wide as those on your mountain bike,” Jan Kopecký points out while highlighting the car’s performance.
Naturally, none of the brand’s legendary racing and rally cars are missing. Among them are the pair of Popular Sport Coupé models and the Octavia 1200 TS, which delivered Škoda’s first successes at the Rallye Monte-Carlo. Visitors can also admire the Škoda 1000 B5 and 200 RS competition specials, models capable of exceeding speeds of 200 km/h. “They are actually faster than the current Fabia,” notes Kopecký. Also on display is the legendary Škoda 130 RS, the car that firmly established the manufacturer among the elite of rallying.
The Škoda 130 LR—recognised literally all over the world thanks to its Matchbox miniature—will delight more than just die-hard die-cast car enthusiasts. “It’s a legend. Its achievements in Turkey, Britain, and San Remo are indelibly etched in our history,” Kopecký says of the car.
The exhibition naturally also features modern competition cars. Visitors can see the Octavia WRC, while the Fabia S2000 occupies a place of honour within the display. “We continue to build on its success with our current cars,” Kopecký explains highlighting the model´s significance. “I would love to start its engine right now. That sound. It gives me goosebumps,” Kopecký admits, shivering.
Visitors can also take a close look at trophies won over the years, racing gear and sustainability-focused exhibits. Yet all of this is only the proverbial tip of the iceberg.
